Women's History - Anglo Saxon Re Enactment day Summer 2021

Re Enactment in our field at home

Cooked Chicken barley stew over an open pit fire, made our own viking bread from scratch, made honey shortbread, played Hnefertafel, read Beowolf, listened to the languages Old English and Old Norse to compare the two, discussed the Danish origins of place names in Lincolnshire, made our own outfits and ate only food that was available in England during Anglo Saxon times

Conclusions: no wonder women cooked all day - it took forever

  • thank goodness for modern clothing fabrics as all those layers in summer are very hot
  • thank goodness for sensible sleeves - anglo saxon bell sleeves get in everything
  • thank goodness we no longer have to wear headdresses!
